Jessica Chastain, Queen Latifah and More Launch Non-Profit Production Company to Tackle Gender Gap

Women and Hollywood: A number of influential Hollywood players -- including Jessica Chastain, Queen Latifah and Catherine Hardwicke -- have teamed up to form We Do It Together (WDIT), a non-profit production company. The aptly named collective was created to finance and produce films, documentaries, TV and other media working towards the goal of empowering women.

This movement is so exciting, especially to me, a woman hoping to eventually work in film and TV. I think the clout and high visibility of these actresses will do much to craft this non-profit production company into a spearhead this movement needs. I think the fact that this group intends to create and develop specific, tangible projects for premiers in places such as Cannes will also do a great deal in furthering this mission, garnering much-needed visibility.

I do appreciate the fact that We Do It Together will be striving to work with both male and female production members, as that removes potential for alienation of men, both in terms of audience and participating members. At times, non-profits and companies that promote missions similar to those being promoted here can become intimidating to a degree that is harmful to the goals at hand. I am excited to see the body of work that emerges from this.
