Hacklet 92 – Workbenches and Toolboxes

Hackaday: Everyone needs a place to work. While some of us have well equipped labs with soldering stations, oscilloscopes, and a myriad of other tools, others perform their hacks on the kitchen table. Still, some hackers have to be on the go – taking their tools and work space along with them on the road.

While I think this was a pretty cool article featuring some pretty decent ideas, I believe that there must be better “tool box hacks” than what is shown here. I realize these are not just cool toolboxes that hold stuff and rather cool toolboxes that hold exactly what you need and some that do cool things that you may need. I do think some of these are well made but I was hoping to see really creative toolbox designs or creative uses for tool boxes. For example, the first picture, the table, is just a table. Yes it is cool looking and made of random scraps which is pretty cool but I am sure someone has a table with really cool features or one that can fold really small and be moved around. I also think craftsmanship is the most important part of a tool box and I am not sure all of these toolboxes are put together super well. I think these are some cool ideas but there are other, potentially cooler and better made ideas. (The Paulk Work Bench for example, although it is for a different kind of use.)

These tool boxes and work stations are the cutest things I have ever seen in my life. And while they may not actually be at all portable within a reasonable carrying standard, I still think they are plenty useful for event-like situations where having a home base is extremely beneficial to the whole process I would love to make myself one of these in a trunk-like orientation so I could put it on pre-existing surfaces and have everything I need in front of me as well as being able to roll it around and keep it organized. I think my favorite design featured here is that of M. Hehr, as the drawers and foldability of the unit would be super great for both organization and storage opportunities. I also like that he sourced the idea from IKEA boxes, as that is a product that is very readily available and would not require a lot of engineering.

I really like the idea of space-saving for the shop or toolbox. While I am lucky enough to have a shop space that I can work out of, it is exceptionally small, around 10'X6'. So, given the tiny workspace, I am always looking for the best ways to optimize my shop storage and work spaces, which on a good day aren't one and the same. This being said, I have to agree somewhat with what Drew said about some of the innovation, It seems a little bit inside the box, when I would like to see innovation that it both interesting and does the job that it needs to do. One thing I am noticing when looking at a lot of these ideas is that they have to be on the heavy side and look awkward to carry around. Something i'd like to see and maybe try to do for myself is create something that is truly portable, perhaps something soft-sided with a single hard work surface, and the general shape of the box could be defined by what was in it, as opposed to having large amounts of empty space inside the boxes. Overall though, I love the idea of keeping making spaces small, compact, and easy to uproot if necessary.
