Good Kids at Pitt Stages

Pittsburgh City Paper: Playwright Naomi Iizuka tackles a difficult subject with grace, honesty and even a sense of poetry in Good Kids. The University of Pittsburgh Department of Theatre Arts does full justice to the 2014 one-act with a solid ensemble directed by Kimberly Griffin and Lisa Jackson-Shebetta in the intimate Henry Heymann Theatre.

Having the opportunity to see this show at Universty of Michigan, I can say this show is a must see for any college sudent, or any member of the public who is uniformed about the development of rape culture in the sphere of higher education. Media has often be called an alternate universe, and this makes me think of the title “good kids”—are they “good” in the present universe, but within the realm of media it’s an entirely different story? In some ways I do believe this is the case, for there is often a sense of empowerment in the anonymity of the media—depending on which side of the camera you’re on. The usage of social media changes the entire nature of assault, from being hidden between two individuals to being accessed by any individual who may or may not have direct knowledge of either the victim or the assaulter.
