Photo Gallery: What's Trending In Lighting Apps

Lighting Designers Talk App Tech | Live Design: How smart is your digital device? The answer might depend on how many—and which—apps you have downloaded and how you use them. Developers have harnessed billions of ones and zeros to create resources that please our four app-happy lighting designers and give them the resources they need, from color swatches and gobo patterns to light meters and note taking, all in service of portability and mobility on the job. There are also a few things these designers wish existed in the app store.

So I guess you could call me a fan of gadgets, widgets, the like, and I either already have or am going to download a number of these apps on my phone, but there is something about the concept of doing so much through phone applications that kind of irks me. To me, design isn’t something that can be done with a few apps on an iPhone, at least not properly and thoroughly. Though these apps might be amazing and convenient tools to have at the tips of your fingers, I would be cautious on how reliant upon them I was. Yeah, they’re awesome in a pinch, but to me, a color on a screen isn’t the same as an actual gel. Organization on a laptop is so much more easily interfaced with than on a phone, and a lighting console is much more useful than a phone or iPad. Yeah, having a bunch of catalogues of gels and texture and what not on your phone is useful. Yeah, being able to control the console with an iPhone is useful. All I’m saying is that these things, to me, should by no means be primary design tools.
