New Vectorworks 2016 Design Software Hits the Entertainment Market

ChurchProduction.com: Global design software developer Vectorworks, Inc. formerly Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc. announces the release of Vectorworks 2016, as well as its rebrand. The release includes more than 100 updates and features for its award-winning CAD and BIM design solutions, including Vectorworks Designer, Architect, Landmark, Spotlight, Fundamentals and Renderworks. From streamlined project sharing, graphical scripting and point cloud support, to subdivision modeling and a system that measures a design's energy performance, the company release says users will be poised to generate, define, build and explore form and function through enhanced workflows and improved design processes.

Software updates can drive me crazy. I love having the most up to date software, but do you really need to release a new version every year just because you want to change the look of the buttons or for other limited impact upgrades? I think not. A lot of times it is a pain. Especially on a Windows machine where you can’t just uninstall Vectorworks – you have to jump through a lot of hoops and go through the registry. I’d rather see Vectorworks change that in an upgrade than some of the other features that I’ve seen in previous upgrades. That doesn’t seem to be the case with Vectorworks ’16. From reading the article, it seems that there are a lot of major updates to the program. How many of them will be useful to us in the entertainment industry? I don’t know. I’m also split on the idea of having multiple people be able to view and edit one document at the same time. Not having done it before, it just seems like too many things can get changed and what happens if two people try to edit the same object? That being said, I’m looking forward to trying it.

I can't explain how excited I am about Vectorworks 2016! There are some pretty cool new features that expand in a significant way the 3D design & conceptual capabilities of Vectorworks. I think the Subdivision tool is going to be an amazing way to generate, design, and render organic forms. I played around with it last night and within minutes I was able to create organic free flowing 3d objects that would have seemed impossible to me otherwise.. The applications for design in our environment seem endless! The Marionette tool is also super cool because it makes Vectorscripting super accessible to people without a strong coding background. Again, I was able to very quickly auto-generate 3d shapes in variety of ways by simply inputting different parameters. On the more practical side, the new Chain Hoist tool is definitely going to be great for Lighting Designers who no longer have to download that god-awful 3rd party plugin.

Nemetschek has grown as a company very rapidly in past couple years personnel wise, and it is clear that these extra resources are going into developing exciting new features for their software. Compared to AutoCad's byzantine feature-set, I honestly can't think of any reason to work in AutoCad if one has the choice to switch.

I am always a fan of the latest and greatest software release. In fact, the download for Vectorworks 2016 is actually downloading to my laptop right now. I only recently actually discovered the 3d tools for Vectorworks 2015 but it unlocked so many more options for modelling objects and I’ve already fallen in love. I fully expect the subdivision tool to transform my work once again. Typically, I have had to create several smaller forms and group them together in order to be able to achieve that kind of design before and it is a slow and very limiting process. I am so excited to see what this update can do, both for my creative work and to simply to improve the speed of my drafting when I am rendering something in 3d.

I think the fact that so many of the improvements to Vectorworks have been consumer driven is fantastic for the software and for us and look forward to exploring this new version of the software.

I love this time of year! Its like Christmas for software updates. All the new CAD packages come out and all the little children rejoice for the new workflow streamlining features. Seriously though, I am happy for the new VW update. I will not talk about VW features vs any other CAD program, as it seems to me that the closest thing to religious zealotry that we have in the school of drama is preference of CAD program. They are all just fine, they all do some things slightly differently, but it should be a personal preference as to what program you can draft in. I am really looking forward to the live collaboration features in the new release. I think that the ability to live edit a single drawing with multiple users will really increase what a team of collaborative drafts people can accomplish. Without the impediments of file typing and drawing revision #’s the collaborative tech design process might go much better.

A Vectorworks Article On The Green Pages?? I am shocked.

There’s a lot of talk about this new version of Vectorworks. It’s also the first version that I haven’t immediately downloaded.

The leaps and bounds that CAD programs have been making in the past few years have been great, but this version of Vectorworks doesn’t really shock me.

I’m more interested in the rebranding of Nemetschek North America to the name Vectorworks, Inc. That’s a strange move for the company, especially given it’s large European base of customers. Vectorworks was acquired by Nemetschek a number of years ago, I find it strange that they would have adopted that name. That being said, Vectorworks was originally developed in Maryland, so I don’t hate the local support.
