Though I have not seen the show (nor do I in the next two weeks, I am pretty glad to see this show close. I’ve read a few reviews on it, and they read pretty much exactly as I would expect. The show is apparently entirely about the history of the family, including much of what is already on their reality television show, except in this version there is the need to interrupt the story telling with broadway musical redneck songs. Now, you’d be right in making the argument that I just am not the target audience of this show, and just because it isn’t my cup of tea (which it really isn’t) that it still could be a cool thing for other people. Now, I’m open to understanding that, but if the show is closing a month after it opened, is there anyone who wants to see it? I read a really great comment on an article about this that stated that you can boil this show down to a venn diagram. On one circle, you have all of the people who love broadway musicals, and on the other circle you have all the people who watch Duck Dynasty. There is very little overlap on this venn diagram, and the commenter also went on to make another point, that all the people who watch the show already know the history of the family, and so they’re getting nothing more out of the experience of watching the musical. So after considering that, I’m fine with the fact that this musical is closing in Vegas. I think it’s a show with a really poor premise, and apparently the free market agrees with me.

Because I am a member of certain fan subcultures myself, I usually try to refrain from hating on other groups for their preferences, as you can like what you like. But come on, the Duck fan culture has gotten a little over board lately, aside from the fact that they show is just a slightly less obnoxious reality TV show, and that’s only because it’s on A&E, no one can honestly tell me that A MUSICAL version was quite necessary. Who but a handful of people would enjoy that? What producer signed up for that? It was doomed from the start! Once the shows patrons, who could afford to go and/or even liked musicals and theater had gone, that would be it! Who else would take the time to see the show? It had no longevity to it. And if I can figure that out than people who have been in the industry a lot longer than me sure knew. If they knew than that leaves me to believe this was just some get rich quick scheme in which case absolutely nothing god was going to come of this shows airing.
