Would Being Blasted With Rain and Snow Get You Back Into Movie Theaters?

gizmodo.com: As more and more content becomes available to stream from the comfort of a living room, cinemas are having a harder and harder time luring audiences into theaters. But will turning the movie-going experience into a tame thrill ride—including blasting audiences in the face with water—help boost attendance?

If it’s really coming down to 4D experiences to save the movie industry they should just give up, Netflix has won this one. Maybe I’m a little quick to judge but I think 4D entertainment seems like a cheap ploy that will surely fail. Although I’ve personally never sat through a 4D experience I can’t imagine I’d like a film more if I was sprayed with water during it. If anything I think I’d just be more removed, maybe even a little annoyed. Why do we in our current society think that if something isn’t working we have to radically rethink it, and change it entirely? Has it never occurred to movie studios that Netflix is more popular for its entertainment because it only charges viewers $9.99 for unlimited streaming, while theaters charge up to $14.00 to see a single film, and to only see that film once. Netflix charges a lot less for a lot more and doesn’t even require their audience to get dressed, let alone leave the comfort of their beds. If the movie industry really wants theaters to survive they should give up on these gimmicks. 3D entertainment was just a way to charge more, and it hurt our eyes, and the “awesome 3-D effect” always seems to disappear after the first 10 minutes. Now you want me to pay even for to be squirted with water? And we wonder why audiences prefer Netflix. What I say to the film industry is end the gimmicks. If you make good content people will want to see it. Movies are part of the social atmosphere of our lives, we go to them on dates, we watch them with our friends, there’s no need to ploy audiences into attendance. Just lower the obscene prices and everyone will come, but until then I’ll be at home watching House of Cards.
