Pittsburgh union serving TV, film production looking for lots of help

TribLIVE: A run of movie projects and two television series making Pittsburgh home have pushed the region's film crew base to an all-time high, with the union looking to add members.

“We are having a shortage of film-industry carpenters,” said Dawn Keezer, director of the Pittsburgh Film Office. “Right now, we are so busy. And there is more work coming.”

It is great that Pittsburgh is getting all this work coming in and that it is creating jobs, but now people need to fill those jobs. Pittsburgh gives great tax incentives to film and tv studios and that is what puts Pittsburgh’s city on display in so many movies. I am confused why more people don’t want these jobs. It seems like a great gig. I would work if I could at this point, but I don’t really have time and I’ll be away for the summer. Job creation is not easy, but with all the business coming in from these productions, it makes Pittsburgh just that much better on that front. Carpenters and contractors who might be out of work if no one is hiring them would be great for this gig. They can get training in how residential or commercial construction is different from scenic construction but a carpenter is a carpenter, and if you know what you are doing and you get a little readjustment, you would be great going from “real construction” to scenic construction.

with so many films being produced in the pittsburgh area it makes sense that they would be looking for hep. I remember how excited i was when i found out they had filmed parts of the dark knight rises here at carnegie mellon. but what i think of is do they want employees or do they want volunteers? we had a discussion in PTM a week ago about the difference between working for free and working for money. If you get a lot of exposure from doing something for free then you should do it, especially if you need big names on your resume. But if these films just want people to go fetch this prop or bring coffee to the director then i don't think this would be worth anyones time. If i was in high school then maybe it would be a different story
