NFTRW Weekly Top Five

Here are the top five comment generating comments of the last week:

Why high schools should have mandatory film classes

theweek.com: Over the five years I taught high school, I came to the realization that all my students were illiterate.

OK, that's hyperbole. They could all read books — but when it came to reading images, none of them knew montage from mise en scène. This, of course, despite a world that has never placed a greater value on visuals.

I have a proposal to fix this: High schools should make taking a course in film studies mandatory for graduation.

Quote of the Day: Michelle Rodriguez: "I Can't Be the Slut"

Women and Hollywood: Michelle Rodriguez recently made some fans unhappy when she spoke out against race-blind casting in superhero movies. "It's so stupid," she said. "Stop stealing all the white people's superheroes. Make up your own."

Carnegie Mellon researchers turn smartphones into rulers

SlashGear: Smartphones can do just about anything you can think of these days thanks to the wealth of apps that are out there. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed a way to use a smartphones sensor to create a 3D model of objects and faces that can be accurately measured. To calibrate the sensors for measurement all the user needs to do is wave the camera around.

5 Reasons Business Cards Still Matter

www.entrepreneur.com: Everything we do in business today is digital -- sending mail, signing contracts, attending meetings, even networking. The business card is one thing that digital will not fully replace anytime soon.

Here are five reasons why the old school business card is still important -- and why you should have a pocket full of them at all times.

Cirque du Wiz??

www.cirquefascination.com: Charlie Smalls and William F. Brown’s The Wiz will be presented as NBC’s third annual live musical, following 2013’s The Sound of Music LIVE!, starring Carrie Underwood, and 2014’s Peter Pan LIVE!, starring Allison Williams and Christopher Walken. The event will be presented December 3, according to Variety.

The production will be co-produced by Cirque du Soleil’s new stage theatrical division and is set to head to Broadway for a revival (also presented by Cirque du Soleil) during the 2016-17 season. No casting information has been announced thus far.

Why would Cirque du Soleil dare to pair of with NBC for another live broadcast of these classic musicals that haven't succeeded. And pairing with The Wiz of all musicals in the biggest mistake of all. I don't ever recall The Wiz being the best musical from our past. All I remember is when the movie came out, the legend Michael Jackson was in it. So does NBC believe that Cirque and them can create a master piece for The Wiz? And if this tactic isn't working, then why does NBC continuously keep doing this LIVE broadway event. Sound of Music and Peter Pan was a bust... Not once did I think to myself that I wanted to see those productions again. And just hearing that the next production they want to publicize is The Wiz. The only things the draws me to this at all is that Cirque will be a part of it. But I don't think it's going to be a benefit to create a piece that incorporates acrobatics and pyro wizards to this musical... or then it just becomes Pippin.
