Mt. Lebanon Readers Theater group plays classics at senior centers

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Forget classic reruns; each month the Mt. Lebanon Library Readers Theater group gives voice to classic literature, plays and even radio shows at senior citizens centers throughout the South Hills.

This month, paying homage to the new baseball season, the group’s repertoire will include Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First.”

Reader’s theatre has always been a fun thing to watch for me. It’s hard to dislike older people, they are more adorable than anything. I’ve seen a few pieces back in my undergrad, they did one on Mark Twain, as well as one going through the different ages of music. There is no limit to what they can do. It allows for community involvement, and with each performance they are enjoying themselves to the fullest. Of course reader’s theatre varies per troupe, and sometimes they like to have some fun. I would be interested in going to this event just to hear the Abbott and Costello bit. No matter how many times I hear it, it cracks me up every time. I don’t know if the amount of energy that was used in that performance helps, but these folks grew up with some of these pieces and I’m sure enjoyed them even more than what I do now.
