How to Fix a Smoke Machine?

smilecloudsfx.wordpress.com:A smoke machine, also known as a “fog” machine, is designed to create a haze of non-toxic smoke for use in carnivals and haunted houses, among other uses by private individuals as well as companies. The smoke machine generates heat, which vaporizes a liquid that becomes the smoke, which an internal fan then wafts from the machine with air currents. You must troubleshoot a smoke machine that isn’t functioning correctly if you’re to continue using it.

This short article outlines a really great thing that every entity that owns any smoke, fog, or haze effects should do to their machines. It’s called maintenance, and far to many foggers go offline and require expensive repair due to improper or lack of maintenance. The concept can be extended past fog effects as well, an electrics department should maintain all of their fixtures, regular cleaning and bench focusses should be the norm. If you don’t take care of your tools then they won’t serve you well when it comes time to use them. Foggers emit a large amount of heated fluid that expands to high volumes of gas, and so naturally build up occurs in that pathway. Eventually if that build up isn’t cleaned, it will block the pathway all together and then the eating elements in the machine won’t be heating anything anything but themselves. The whole thing over heats and it’s a really expensive fix, so the take away is to practice proper maintenance.

Having gotten a broken one for free I would love to know how to fix one. although I think this article was more about upkeep rather than repairing a totally broken one, i think i learned something about how to keep them in great shape so they don't turn out like the one i got. I've found myself many times wondering how hard it is to have a fog machine and how many things i can actually put it into both in theatre and themed entertainment. I would rather have one that actually puffs large amounts of haze or fog over a large distance. I've only been able to get my hands on ones that only generated about 4 or 5 feet of haze before disappearing. I think thats the reason I haven't really felt like they were fixing because they were crap to begin with. When i get a real one i will defiantly put these skills to use.
