Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week-Graduate Education

Carnegie Mellon University: Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week was started in 1993 by the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students as a way to support and appreciate graduate and professional students. The week seeks to emphasize the contributions, impact and value of graduate and professional students on campuses throughout the United States.

Since entering the School of Drama, my perception of the role of graduate students within an academic setting has changed completely. The frequency of my interactions with grad students is almost equal with that of some of my peers. However, in non-Drama classes, grad students tend to be less of a presence, occupying the space at the front of the classroom when the teacher isn't. It is nice to have more ready access to people, who - although students - may have more knowledge or field experience than I do as an undergraduate. While this principle is likely intended to apply beyond Drama, the reality is rather different. More than once, I have heard students whisper when a grad student gives a lecture, "But where do they come from? Where do they go?" The integration of grads and undergrads within Drama is refreshing, and really contributes the holistic education and environment the School of Drama fosters.
