‘Clinton: The Musical’ Revisits Bill and Hillary as President

Variety: Hillary Clinton leans forward from her desk at the Oval Office. “Good evening,” says the former first lady. “I’d like to tell you the story of my first presidency.”

The line is a lukewarm zinger straight out of a “Saturday Night Live” skit, but it sets the tone for sharper jabs that will be flung throughout “Clinton: The Musical.” In this case, the title character isn’t Hillary — it’s Bill, whose eight years as commander-in-chief serve as the backdrop for a buzzy new Off Broadway musical production that opens Thursday night.

This is fascinating and I wish I could see it. I am a huge fan of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson but the difference is that BBAJ is both about events that happened many years ago but that also has connections to modern day. There is a harshness, though, to creating a satirical look at an old presidential family that is still alive and very much present in the political world. I think that there is actually the potential for this musical, if it gets enough hype, to hurt Hilary's campaign which is going to need as much help as it can get in the first place. Also, what are the rules of creating theatre like this? Do they have to get permission to create art based on someone's life or can they just create blatantly offensive theatre? Interesting question.

I have always felt like theater’s biggest job was to get people to think about the world around them and not just let something idly by just happen because in order to do that life is not being lived. The greatest aspect of theater is how it can mimic life and almost point a mirror to the audience and get them to reflect on what it is they are seeing, feeling, and experiencing. With that in mind, I am happy there is a musical about the Clintons. While this is a farce there does exist some fact to the fiction. I find it a to be a true joy when theater makes commentary on what is happening in the now of the world because that is often times when theater can be most effective in achieving its number one goal. Politics just always happen to be the most relevant in effecting everyone and what seems to be a huge problem in our country today is the lack of people willing to really sit down and think hard about if the people they are ready to stand behind and cast their vote to are really worth it and the best thing for the greater community. What I am really hoping this musical will do is remind people of the facts of the past and get them to stay opened minded about who they are voting for president. Because what I really hope to see happen is that the person who is voted in to represent and lead our country is voted in because they are the most qualified for the job not because it’s time for a change in government or just because they will make great history.
