Met operas at theaters to include 6 new productions

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: With two live transmissions remaining in the current season, The Met: Live in HD has announced its schedule for 2015-16, which will mark the 10th season of live transmissions from the Metropolitan Opera in New York. There will be 10 broadcasts in all, including all six new productions.

Ok so right from the beginning I thought that this was a cool idea. I think people for a long time have been trying to find the way to bring theatre to the masses without the theatre having to go to the masses, because of the way public opinion has swayed (not wanting to spend money to go to a show, inconvenient, etc.) So this idea of broadcasting the Met live works for a couple of reasons. First, opera is a good test audience because of the amount of money that is typically associated with its audiences; they have the ability to support endeavors like this. Secondly, the idea of having it live in a movie theatre continues the support of live entertainment yet brings it to audiences that aren’t in New York City, like myself. There is theatre that is less than 10 minutes from my house that was listed on the article. This then leads me to the fact that this should be published more because I truly think more people would take advantage of it.

I commented on another article about opera earlier, where I said that the problem I see with opera is the surrounding opinion of opera as expensive, long, and unintelligible to most young audiences. I think that some of the surrounding opinion is because people have never seen an opera- I haven’t, so I can’t say whether any of the things I have heard about it is true. This sounds like a really great way to bring opera to the masses, however, and make it more accessible to all. Because of the related expense of going to a theatre, bringing the opera’s performances to a movie theatre (where the princes are considerably lower) is both a good way to widen the audience base for opera companies, and to educate more young people about opera and theatre. I would love to see an opera performance and learn what it is all about. Especially in our industry, I think opera is often overlooked as a source of work and knowing more about it (especially if it is this accessible) is a great way to know what one is getting in to and what is out there.
