Bob Barnhart On Lighting The Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show

Super Bowl XLIX 2015 Halftime Show content from Live Design: “We start long before the artist is picked, as the NFL wants information about lighting positions, which we deal with in the summer, and the artist is usually picked in the fall,” explains Bob Barnhart, lighting designer from Full Flood in Los Angeles, who lit the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show on February 1, 2015.

I actually did not manage to watch the halftime show, but I can imagine from previous shows that it was absolutely insane. First of all, I can not imagine having to design a show without a topic. Having the ability to create a general setup for any artist is beyond me. I tend to ely on the subject of the show to influence my designs, but when the artist is not picked until the fall, the most you can really do is get a general, multipurpose set up that can be kind of able to be manipulated in case the artist needs a certain special thing to happen at any point during the performance. Also, the scale of the space and having all the hanging positions ready to go and knowing where everything needs to be on such a large scale. Another concern I have is budget because any super small change could be a significant budget change.
