ArcAttack will rock you, just not literally shock you

TribLIVE: With the drama and intensity of a rock concert taking place in the middle of an electrical storm, the ArcAttack: Tesla Coil Music show will feature live rock music and flashing bolts of electricity that shoot from two giant Tesla coils to strike a guitarist wearing a chainmail suit.

The all-ages show is slated for Feb. 28 at the Hillman Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Shady Side Academy in Fox Chapel.

This seems like a really cool way to get anyone interested in the science behind electricity. I’ve seen exhibits where people wearing chain mail get struck by these monstrous bolts of electricity, but I have never experienced it being coupled with music, which is in part created by those same arcs. I think it’s truly a good way to inspire people, especially our youth, to become interested in both applied science and to create new and interesting things, no matter what field they wish to pursue. What I think is perhaps the most fascinating part of this show is that electricity is one of the most vital components to our modern day to day lives, and is also one of the most vital component of modern entertainment, yet nobody ever really thinks about it. Nobody goes to a play and thinks about the electrical requirements for the performance, maybe a few people at a rock concert will, but this performance demands that question from the audience and then gives the answer.
