Union Warns L.A. Stage Workers To Stop Stealing On The Job
Deadline: Backstage theft at Los Angeles music and theater venues has become so widespread that the union representing stagehands has had to warn members to stop stealing on the job. The union, IATSE Stage Technician Local 33, reps stage workers at such venues as the Hollywood Bowl, Staples Center, Pantages Theatre, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the Ahmanson, Greek Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, and the Dolby Theatre.

I can understand how the local 33 warning to its members could seem strange, as there are as of yet no proven cases of theft in the workplace by their members, but I can understand how it is an endemic problem. The joke that was IATSE actually stands for is "I always take something extra" is too often accurate. I have known seasoned union stage hands, none here in Pittsburgh, argue that taking tools, equipment or supplies from their employer is legitimate, while it is in fact plainly stealing. The fact that local 33 is suspicious of union members taking other members and other employees tools is worrisome. The article mentions that members caught stealing will be punished to the “fullest of local 33’s abilities”. I wonder if this means expulsion from the union, or a embargo on employment in that area. I do not have any knowledge of cases of expulsion from the union, and would be curious to know if there are circumstances in which that would happen.
