street light disco illuminates sydney with reflective optical effects

www.designboom.com: located in sydney’s martin place, a pedestrian promenade in the heart of the central business district, office feuerman has built an installation called ‘street light disco’. the project takes the vertical banner, which is typically used as a marketing device, and reinvents it as a dynamic and interactive surface, creating a new sensory experience. a familiar piece of city infrastructure is transformed, altering the existing urban streetscape and encouraging the passersby to pause and enjoy the public space of the metropolis.

I think that this is an awesome an idea for a public art installation for a couple of reasons. First, it is a very simple idea that was executed well. It is not exactly distracting to the general public. Secondly and building off of the first reason, the installation fits in with the surrounding architecture, almost enhancing the surrounding area. Also it seems as though the piece was commissioned by the city, which I think is great. It shows that the city is dedicated to spreading the arts to the general public and supporting the artistic community in Sydney. I wish that more cities would commission public art installations, especially ones like this. Sometimes installations have negative reputations as being obtrusive, rather an installation should add to the space, not distract from it, especially if it is in such a public place, like a shopping area. The project also requires no electricity, only sunlight promoting a more eco-friendly environment.

I absolutely adore this installation! It’s so minimalistic, yet it is so beautiful and creative. The idea of a flattened “disco ball” is incredible. Also, the fact that they were designed in a pattern which allows the banners to sway a lot in the wind was ingenious. It looks similar to the structural beams in many glass buildings. I feel like something like that would be done in New York near the MoMA, or central park. I adore simplistic installations that enhance the beauty of surrounding areas. By just using light, people can enjoy art without having to walk around anything and it is such an easy installation. I really hope that more pieces that interact with light are created, as they are often my favorite installations. Although the colorful lights are very cool, I enjoy the natural light more. It gives more of a calming effect than the rave-like light at night. Either way, the installation is very intriguing and beautiful.

This installation looks really nice! They definitely chose the perfect location for the piece as well, which is why I think it works so well. It turns a regular street area into a more upscale and exciting area to be. The idea is incredibly simple as well, and the modern art style is quite non-offensive. It’s very reminiscent of Sydney as well, it reminds me of the light coming over the Sydney opera house. I’m not quite sure how to feel about the way the installations changes to the nighttime however. It kind of turns a little bit cheesy with the quickly alternating colored lights, however I do think that at first it would seem to make sense to the people who designed the piece. The way that the light hits the pavement in the afternoon seems really soothing and interesting, especially because of the way that the flag waves kind of smoothly and slowly due to the weight of the piece.

Downside to this art piece, it might blind a few vehicles passing by at the right time of the day. On the upside, you just throw in a little wind, and you’ve got a show waiting to happen. It’s almost like looking out over water and just being calmed by the shimmer, I’m sure this might have a similar type of effect except of course, it’s on the ground. I wonder if something like this has been done before. I mean I’m sure it has, just perhaps not in this kind of setting. As simple an installation as this is, it’s the small things in life that can add a smile to one’s face and brighten one’s day. One thing is for sure you will definitely be able to notice when you are near one, there is just something about shiny objects that is pleasing to the eye, and this has quite a few, and the show is different every time.
