Hollywood on Charlie Hebdo Shooting: ‘Free Speech Must be Defended’

Variety: After 12 people were killed in an armed attack on the Paris headquarters of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday, those in Hollywood and the creative community have spoken out in solidarity with the magazine, espousing the values of free speech in the process.

Many have echoed the recent threats against Seth Rogen and James Franco’s “The Interview,” including Tina Fey, who commented on the deadly shooting at the Television Critics Press Tour.

“Obviously this is terrible and tragic and upsetting,” she said. “It makes you remember how important free speech is and must be defended. We all must stand firm on issue of free speech.”

I've been stepping lightly over the topic of Charlie Hebdo. Personally, I'm still trying to figure out where I stand on the subject. However, this article helped me do that. Free speech is something that should be protected at all costs. But does freedom of speech the same thing as freedom of consequence? Just because the government can't prosecute you from saying racial slurs doesn't mean you should. What happened in Paris was horrible. However, Charlie Hebdo was a incredibly racist and Islamophobic magazine. This doesn't excuse the murders. Yes, defend free speech to the end. Does the mass public realize that the blatant racism published by the editors was the reason behind the attacks? This wasn't some 'attack on freedom'. This was an attack because editors were publishing articles specifically targeting Muslims in France by putting images of Muhammed on the cover. People are going to inevitably angry at anything you post, but if you go out of your way to target peoples' religion in that direct of a sense, then you're going to get one hell of a backlash. Did the writers deserve to die? No. Did the Muslim community have a reason to be mad? Yes. Should they have shot up the place? No. Should this magazine stop printing racist material? Yes.
