College students, staffers deal with being away from home for holidays

TribLIVE: As college students across the region packed cars to head home for a near monthlong winter break, Duquesne University senior Monica Chmiel was packing just a few things.

“I wish I could say that it is not hard to be away from your family at this time of year, but it surely is,” said Chmiel, 22, of North Bethlehem, a student manager for the Duquesne women's basketball team.

This article is something I can definitely relate to. The kind of atmosphere at CMU and probably other universities is very comforting. Yes there is a good point that during breaks it's very nice to take a break to see family and take a break from work. However, sometimes it's a struggle to have the money to make those trips during those breaks. Having work study and balancing college life and school can be a big challenge. But with the opportunities provided by the school, it is possible to make time to work and earn more money during the "stress relieving time". And since our campus provides fun activities to students who don't leave for the holidays; on those tough days when students want to take a break from those extra shifts, students can take a break and do something fun with other coaches, friends, and teachers that they've created a family friendly relationship with. In my personal opinion, I would rather work towards earning enough money to go home for the holidays and finding work there for a little bit to take a break from Pittsburgh, however my home town isn't over seas, so I really respect what CMU and other universities do for their students.

Just like Hannah, I can relate to this article in a plethora of ways. Going home to say hello to my family is not cost effective when I don’t have the ability to make money to go towards tuition and other living costs. Yes it may be nice to see them for a week, but I am an independent person and I have much different values. College versus home life is like night and day for me. If I could, I would have stayed in Pittsburgh for the winter break so that I could maintain working, and the newfound freedoms of living on my own. I am also impressed with how kind other colleges are to students who do not go home for break. I wish that CMU would have free meals over vacations rather than making everyone eat off-campus without much notice.
