A Trip to the Work Boot Factory

Tools of the Trade: Before a recent trip to Portland, Oregon for JLC LIVE, I arranged to visit the headquarters and U.S. factory of footwear maker, Keen. Originally known for making sports sandals, the 10-year old company has since expanded into other categories—most recently, work boots. Their Industrial Line includes boots with features such as puncture-resistant soles, metatarsal guards, slip-resistant tread, and steel, composite, or aluminum toes.

A good pair of work boots is just as important as a good tape measure or a good hammer, and for people who work on job sites everyday it’s critical that the boots match their needs and are strong enough to handle that kind of work over a long period of time. It was really cool to see what goes into theses work boots, and to look at every step of the process. I found it interesting how they can’t be “made in America”, because of the outsourced parts, but “American built” is still pretty good. Also, even though they aren’t “made in America”, there’s still a surprising amount of work that goes into assembling them. The part that I found most interesting was the fact that they test a shoe every hour, and they really test it hard. It’s important to have a really high level of quality control, and it’s cool to see how Keen ensures that with its work boots.

I find this article pretty appropriate as seeing that we just went through the chain motor school this past week. We were able to see how everything came together and the parts were assembled. A factory setting would most certainly be interesting to work in, but every job is different. Seeing how different parts come together and everyone depends on everyone else to do their job. Sure the boots aren’t quite made in America as most people would like, because we’re proud that there are products that are American made. I have no doubt that boots are pretty essential to the work life, because they for one have definitely saved my feet a few times. I know some factories are separated from the headquarters, but I guess that all depends on location as to where you would actually be able to build your product and be able to ship them out effectively.
