Measuring Success in Performing Arts Facilities

The Clyde Fitch Report: We’ve had several interesting projects lately concerning City-owned performing arts facilities (not in New York) operated by private nonprofits. Typically we’re hired by the city in question to have a look at what’s going on, which usually means there’s some tension around how the facility is being operated and how much the City is investing annually to sustain operations.

I’ve never really thought about the relationship between the owner and the operator in these quasi-governmental performing arts centers. This article seems to be trying to sell their analysis software, but I think it raises a bigger question about how a performing arts center should be run, and how much say the operator and the owner should have in the mission and direction of the organization.

I’m also not entirely sure the article is accurate in the way it says to evaluate the success of a performing arts center. Is it performing art? Is it engaging the community? Is it at least mildly self-sustaining? What more could the owner of a non-profit performing arts center ask for?
