SAG-AFTRA Pushing for Florida Incentives

Backstage: Although Florida is famously home to the production of telenovelas, most of the 4,000 local SAG-AFTRA members earn a living in less dramatic roles. Student and indie films, commercials, and theater form the backbone of the union actor’s wages in Florida, according to SAG-AFTRA officials based in Miami.

Maybe this is happening because the movie scene only uses the area for location purposes and nothing else. I think Miami tends to get looked at more as an exotic location for filming that only gets used for special projects. And I think that is largely due to the vastly larger entertainment hotspot of Orlando which is 5 hours north, making Miami even more isolated. 5 years ago, there were 9 shows being filmed at the same time all around South Florida, including Dexter and Burn Notice. But maybe there's only so much you can do or storyline you can create before the whole tropical city motif gets old. It doesn't at all surprise me that theatre, indie films, and commercials are now the backbone of the entertainment industry in South Florida. I mean, what are all the performance artists supposed to do? They're still going to create their art, just through other mediums. Spectacular, thought provoking artwork comes out of South Florida, and I wish that the rest of the country didn't see it as a tourist gift shop.
