Kobalt Double Drive 6X Speed Screwdriver

ToolGuyd: Over at Lowes, I caught glimpse of a new Kobalt Double Drive 6X speed screwdriver. This is a little different than the 2014 edition of the Kobalt Double Drive, in how it has speed-multiplying gearing.

All of the previous Kobalt Double Drive screwdrivers had 1-to-1 gearing.

This new 6X speed model has different gearing that allows screwdriver bits to turn 3X for every 1 complete turn of the handle.

While the idea of a 6x speed screwdriver seems like a good one, I would agree with the author that I would never buy one. I can't really think of an application where I wouldn't just reach for a drill if I'm really in need of that much speed. The lack of any fine control makes this pretty useless, unless you really are just installing wall plates or doing something where you don't need any control what so ever. That being said, even then the risk of stripping out a screw would be so great that the speed wouldn't be worth it. It could be interesting to try out but ultimately I think it would just end up sitting in a tool bag never being used. Is it worth spending even just $20 on something that I most likely will never use again? Nope.

The whole reason i would use a screwdriver instead of a drill or electric screwdriver is because i want precision or i want to feel the torque. You don't really get that out of a gear driven screw driver. I'd rather buy a cheap electric screwdriver than a gear driven screwdriver. I really don't see any use for a gear driven screwdriver, just use some elbow grease.

Yeah that's cool, but like why?? If I want to fasten something faster, I'll grab my drill. If I want extra precision or need to feel how much torque I'm applying myself, I'll grab my screwdriver set. So why the heck would I want a product that is the worst of both worlds. This is a tool that sounds cool, but is going to just end up sitting in your tool bag. For $20, I could go buy some much more needed essential tools. Even the suggested use case of installing wall plates seems somewhat ridiculous. You need to be able to feel exactly how much force you are applying so as not to damage the wall plate or strip out the screw. This product does not sound like it would do the job well..

While this is a really neat screwdriver, it is so unnecessary! Like Ban and Drew have said, there is really no need for this. Either use a screwdriver, or grab a drill. Sure, it would be cool to have a screwdriver that did all the work for you at 6 speeds, but there is really no need for it. Ratcheting is the only advancement that makes screwdrivers better. Aside from that, just go for a drill. There are so many other tools you could get for $20 that would be a better investment. An electric screwdriver is extraneous and, ultimately, not worth much at all.

What everybody here in this comment thread is not thinking about is what if you don't have a drill? Or it is out of your budget? Or maybe the space where the screw is is out of reach or not feasible for a drill? It's more than just the fact that it goes faster than an actual screw driver, that does not mean that it is less precise or that you have a greater chance of stripping the screw. It says that it turns 3x for every one turn, which means you can still turn it at whatever speed you'd like, you're only going to strip something if you're turning out of control or YOU are not being precise, it has nothing to do with the tool. You're more important than the tool, you control the tool, it doesn't control you.

It seems as though everyone is trying to come up with the next best thing whether it’s in electronics, communication, or in general tools. I’ve stuck with my trusty screwdriver, and it has served me well. We’ve been through quite a bit together, from putting my bike back together, or working on a home project with my dad. It’s hard to make those kinds of changes. You know you get attached to something, and even when it’s down and out, you just say “come on, one more time.” To replace a screwdriver with a new one that gets the job done a bit more quickly is like slow down there youngster, you might be new in town, and we don’t take well to strangers. But hey, you never know until you try it right? Maybe it could make a nice adjustment, I guess it’s just limited to the difficulty of the project you’re working with.

WOW this is a really cool tool! Except for the fact that it is incredibly useless. Like everybody is saying if you want to screw something this fast just grab your drill. It is much quicker and will provide much more torque toward the screw you are screwing. Alternatively most times screwdrivers are used for more precise applications. I can see some instances where this tool might be useful due to its speed. For example there are times where you only use your screwdriver because you cant get your drill into the space that you are screwing. In that sense it may be useful. That being said I mainly use my screwdriver for cable making and for this the screwdriver doesn't really make sense. I would much rather feel how tight I am screwing the screw in because the last thing I want is to have 20 amps or more of power arching in my connector.
