Community theater an outlet for local creativity

www.detroitnews.com: The lights dim, the curtain rises.

But wait, that's your neighbor, a work colleague or a friend of a friend onstage in that elaborate costume and make-up bringing this performance to life. It's showtime and quite possibly you know the stars.

In theaters throughout Metro Detroit, hundreds of friends, neighbors, work colleagues and newfound friends are involved in area community theater groups that have launched their 2014-15 seasons.

This is a great article about how special community theatre is. It may not be the best of the best and always produce Broadway level performances, but they can be good productions. The people who do community theatre are there because they enjoy theatre and want to do something different in their free time. It is a great place to meet new people from different walks of life. There are a lot of talented people doing normal jobs, that would not get a chance to perform if it was not for community theatre. Though money is often tight, spirits are high.

This article was heartwarming. This sort of family-like feeling is probably what made most of us get into theatre in the first place. It was interesting to read about all of the different types of people who get involved in community theater. As someone who never was involved in community theater, this article shed a lot of light on what it is like to be apart of this environment. All of these people have everyday jobs in a variety of different fields. All of these people make varying amounts of money. However, theater is what unites them all. I would be interested to see the different average ages of people who participate in community theater. I imagine the ages range from 10 years old to 70 years old. However, I would also imagine most participants are either on the young or old side of the spectrum. Sometimes, I feel like when we are doing theater as a job and not as a hobby, we lose this sense of togetherness and excitement. I wish we could all remember this feeling that probably got us into this field in the first place.

Community theater is a very interesting ball game. They are always a really great way to show off community talent. The important thing to remember as an audience member about seeing community theater, is that you a primarily going to see community talent not a Broadway quality show. This is a huge mistake that many audience make, and end but complaining about the show when it has done a really good job bringing community together. So, next time you go to see a community theater production please don't go expecting Broadway, but a fun community experience.
