West End theatre facing strike action following collapsed pay talks

News : The Stage: West End theatres are facing the threat of strike action from backstage workers after negotiations over a new pay deal broke down.

Backstage union BECTU has been in talks about its members’ pay with the Society of London Theatre since July. It is seeking London living wage – £8.80 – as a minimum for members on three pay grades that are currently below that rate, and a 6% rise for all of its other members.

This is ridiculous. Why are so many people against raising wages to cost of living? First the teachers in the US, and now this. Come on, people! We are all humans. We all have to make money to buy food. We need the necessities, and in this day and age money is needed to acquire the necessities.
The teacher fight is getting out of hand in my town. They haven't had a cost of living raise in about 6 years. This means that a lot of teachers are living under the poverty line. Teaching is no longer a respectable job. Only those who really love the profession are staying. There are no more benefits either. Money is taken from their paycheck to be put into a retirement fund. Why is the government getting so stingy on money?? What happens when all the teachers quit because they can't live off of the salary? Do they want the public not educated? One of these days, this is going to bit them in the butt.
I read an article recently about a school district in Philadelphia. Apparently, the same thing is happening there too, except it has gotten way worse. The teachers ave decided to strike because of it. They are no longer administering government standardized testing because of the unfair means it tests. It is a little known fact that kids from well-off families do better than poor families, for a number of reasons. Standardized testing simple evaluated the economic level of the students.
