Being from the East Coast, I've only ever really known New York, Chicago, Boston and a few other places as recognizable, reputable theatre scenes. I would have never known that the Bay Area has a theater scene, let alone an award system. To also hear that over 180 productions involved is amazing. My thought is that perhaps the awards were modeled after the Jeff Awards in Chicago. While awards are not always necessary to respect theatre, it raises the image of the theater scene in a city. In Pittsburgh, we have the Gene Kelly Awards for High School Musical Theatre. This gives students incentive to give a greater effort and also raises the image of theatre in high school, something that doesn't always have a great image.
