Pict Classic Theatre takes on Shakespeare's back-stabbing 'Macbeth'

TribLIVE: “Macbeth,” William Shakespeare's shortest work, is tightly crammed with witches and warriors, murders and betrayals, treachery and incautious ambition.

“It is a play about warriors and witchcraft,” says Alan Stanford, artistic and executive director of Pict Classic Theatre, who is directing the company's production of “Macbeth.” The Scottish play begins performances Oct. 9 in the Stephen Foster Memorial in Oakland. “It is a play about ambition.”

I have never had the chance to see a performance of Macbeth, and I only read the play for the first time last year, but I found it really interesting to see how it is described. I feel like Shakespeare often has a connotation of being long, dull, and incomprehensible, but here you get a completely different story, of a play that is intense and full of action. It was also cool to get a little behind the scenes from an actor's perspective, especially how Grace Pazerski decided to give Lady Macbeth a backstory that wasn't strictly in the script in order to better inform the character.

As a side note, it is really perplexing and also quite annoying every time I see PICT referred to as the PICT Classic Theatre, because what you're really saying is Pittsburgh Irish and Classic Theatre Classic Theatre, and seriously, why on earth would you do that??
