Performance is ode to mother, from son in the sky

Las Vegas Review-Journal: Jonathan Cole spins on a ladder that twirls from the ceiling. Cole appears to our eyes as a visual poem — an aerial performer, raised on gymnastics, seasoned by Cirque du Soleil.

“I exist on the ground, but I live in the air,” Cole says.

It was always so.

Growing up in Akron, Ohio, and later in California, his mother shuttled him from home to gym and back, 90 minutes round-trip.

Jonathan Cole did something very sweet for his mother who he owed a lot of his career to. His mother is the reason why he has gotten to where he is today and he wanted to pay it back to her. It easy to get caught up in our work as artists and its important to take a step back now and then and reflect on how we got to where we are today. We can't take anything for granted and need to be aware in general of our current state. Aerial performance is a unique art that is practiced by a small group of people, but the work is beautiful to watch. Performing aerial silks is just another platform of expression as an artist thats freeing. Glad Jonathan did this for his mother and hopefully this article has inspired others to pay it forward to some degree or another.

This is beautiful. Having the support from your parents or a guardian is one of the most important things in a child's development. Jonathan Cole would not be where he is today without his mother and her encouragement. And now, in a time when she's in need, it's so wonderful to see that he is doing the same for her. Aerial performance is extremely difficult and to do it well takes complete devotion. You are putting so much work into your body that it takes over you, it has to. So the fact that he is dedicating his work to his mother is him dedicating his entire self to her. It's the perfect way of saying thank you for everything she has done!
