Method To The Madness: The Anatomy Of An Audio Rack

Pro Sound Web: Prior to hitting the road with Soundgarden on tour a couple of years ago, Dave Rat documented his front of house racks.

This collection of gear was deployed with a main system of L-Acoustics K1 line source (3-way) loudspeakers in flown arrays, K1-SB (2 x 15-in) subwoofers, and LA8 amplified controllers.

This is really interesting to see a breakdown of what goes into the logic developing a rack that goes out on tour. It seems that these days the days of rack mounted gear is slowly being replaced by in board processing units that allow for less equipment to have to be taken on tour from city to city. It is interesting to see how integral all of this gear was to the Soundgarden tour. I assume that the band uses an analogue desk and that is why much of this equipment is needed at front of house and it is nice to see that rack mounted gear is not totally dead yet. I think the coolest part of this article is where it talks about Dave Rat's FOH set up being sideways. This is not typically how we think of FOH setups and I wish this article would've explained a little more about this as well as the rack setups.
