Event Safety Summit to Feature Indianapolis State Fair Investigators

PLSN: Scott Nacheman and Charlie Fisher will be featured speakers at the Event Safety Alliance’s first Event Safety Summit, set to take place here in early December. They will offer their perspectives on the mechanical and operational failures that were implicated in the 2011 structure collapse at the Indiana State Fair, which killed seven and injured 58.

I instinctively have an strange distaste to the article referring to "Feature Indiana State Fair Investigators". This is purely based off of the connotation that typically goes with hearing that an event is going to feature someone or some act. Its far too close to profitting off of a tragic event. I am very happy that they will be speaking at the event because they are the first hand experience of the aftermath of the tragic event. Both of the panels that will be taking place cover great information that seem to hopefully address the proper information. One that I have heard far too many irritating negligent responses to is "how can you expect them to plan for the weather" to which my usual response is that if the area you are in has a history of weather and/or the weather before the event, forecast during and after all suggest severe weather someone has to be accountable to go through and make sure that such issues were factored into the engineering. There is a documentary on one of the biggest architecture screw ups in New York where they build a sky scraper with supports in the middle of the outer edges of the building instead of at the four corners. Most of the math and atmosphere had be factored but no one thought about the wind from a 45 that very well could have brought the building down.
