Adobe brings “streaming” Photoshop to Chrome OS

Ars Technica: Chrome OS has been a fine OS for people who just consume content on the Internet, but other than writing documents, the OS hasn't offered much for content creators. If you deal with photos at all, Chrome OS has mostly been a non-starter because it has been missing one crucial piece of software: Adobe Photoshop. Today, Google and Adobe are finally fixing that situation, bringing Photoshop to Chrome OS.

This is great and all, but I have to ask, does anybody actually use Chrome OS? And of the people who do, are any of them going to have a hankering to do any serious image editing on their Chomebook? This partnership seems to be pushing the scope of Internet surfing Chromebooks out of their intended reach. While I can see the obvious rationale Google has for wanting to increase the amount of things their platform can do, it seems a little pointless to me. Anecdotally, several years ago I considered getting a Chromebook to carry around with me to class for notes and all that. I decided against it because I realized that all I could do was take notes and surf the web. Maybe if I knew I could use Photoshop too I would have been swayed, but probably not...

I agree with Ben that this is a cool idea, but that it could have possible found a better platform. It seems the idea could have been introduced in a more popular market. However, there is benefit to introducing it for Chrome OS. The people who do use that platform will get the perk of trying the feature first, and Adobe will get the perk of troubleshooting on a less major platform. Then, if all goes well and the product works smoothly, maybe it will be introduced for other platforms. As a Photoshop user, this sounds neat to me. I'm not going to go run out and get a Chromebook, but if I could use it on the computer I have now, I would.

i don't personally use os chrome, as far as i know i just use the chrome browser on my mac. having just purchased the adobe suite, knowing that this existed would have been nice when searching for the programs. this definitely is a great idea and will probably boost the amount of people who use os chrome. i hope this combination works out well so that other programs might follow in photoshops footsteps. at the moment chrome os is not there yet i feel. its one of those things where its great that they are upgrading but at the moment their platform is basic.

Contrary to what some people believe, Chromebooks have actually been doing decently for what they are. They just aren't used by college students as much because we need more from our computers. However, with this change and Office Web Apps becoming more well known, I'm sure more will be coming to ChromeOS and Chromebooks. I'm curious to see where this goes, especially since Chromebooks are really cheap comparatively speaking. The only caveats are internet speed/always on connections, which hopefully won't be a problem in the next few years, and the subscription costs.
