Theatre Factory's 'Nunsense' is homecoming, reunion all in one

TribLIVE: Pittsburgh actor Rita Kelly performed the role of the Reverend Mother Regina in “Nunsense” in hundreds of performances before she moved to Ocala, Fla., eight years ago.

When her daughter, Erin Seaberg, signed on as director for the Theatre Factory's production of the musical comedy and asked her mother to fly north to play the nun in the show, she says her mother couldn't refuse — once again proving that old habits die hard.

It's always fun to watch the different productions on the Nunsense franchise all over the country. They are great shows for smaller theaters to do because they are small casts and often you can use the same group of people over and over again. Which is exactly what audiences want to see when they are coming to the next Nunsense show. The company, by doing so many shows together, really create an ensemble performance that engages the audience at a different level than by only seeing a company once. If you've started a Nunsense franchise, you do have to be aware that you have to keep the company around if you want to continue doing shows. So it makes sense that they brought back Mrs. Kelly to do Nunsense, by having her there you have an established audience that will come to see her. I'd be interested to know if there's anyone else in the company that has worked with Mrs. Kelly in other Nunsense shows. It'll be interesting to see the dynamic of that group in rehearsal as well in performance.
