History Goes Digital

Signshop: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, holds a very special place in the annals of U.S. history. It is the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence as well as the U.S. Constitution, and was home to significant figures such as Founding Father Benjamin Franklin, Revolutionary War icon Betsy Ross, author Louisa May Alcott, Civil War General George B. McClellan and comedian/actor Bill Cosby. So when you’re entrusted with preserving all of that important history for the benefit of citizens of the present, you don’t take that mission lightly.

I think bringing technology into a museum will peak some more interest in american history and the museum experience in general. These wall allow guests to immersive themselves into the history of the event and learn about it through these three screens. Having witnessed some of these types of screens in state museums I think that the use of interactivity in a museum/exhibits design is crucial for successfully getting the attention of the next generation of museum goers.

Wait a minute. "Of course, video would certainly be more attractive to our younger visitors who have grown up looking at screens all their lives, helping them relate to our collection more readily than they might have just looking at the artifacts themselves." Are you kidding me?!? Do not encourage that behavior. You will only ruin our society. The point of going to a museum is to see the actual things. If we wanted to look at it on a screen, it would be easy enough to go on the internet. I mean, the video wall is cool and all, but don't let that replace seeing the actual things! Get some cases that are temperature controlled. Use one-way mirror glass or something so that we can see in without light killing the artifacts. Do something so that visitors can actually see the artifacts! Seeing an image of it does nothing. That is what the internet is for. Why go somewhere to look at something you could see from your couch?
The video wall will be a nice touch and good for them while they try to update.
