Filming in Pittsburgh, Will Smith football movie needs extras

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The untitled Will Smith movie, scheduled to start shooting in Pittsburgh in October, is looking for men ages 18 to 30 with prior football experience to appear as extras. Anyone now in high school or playing for a college team cannot be considered due to eligibility issues.

An open call tryout will start at 9 a.m. Oct. 4 at Bethel Park High School, Practice Field One, 309 Church Road, Bethel Park (15102). Hopefuls must wear their own workout gear, bring grass football cleats and be available for rehearsal and filming dates that will fall between Oct. 20-31.

To be honest, I couldn't care less about open casting calls, but what really got me about this article is that current athletes on high school and college teams can't audition. Why is this? Wouldn't they be the perfect actors? The article says that there are "eligibility issues" but doesn't elaborate. One reason I can see why student athlete's are not allowed to audition is just that; they're students. School comes first. That brings up another slew of "but what about...." 's. We allow actors to participate in outside projects (with faculty advice). If the athlete's have permission from their guardians and coaches, I don't see why they can't be part of a football movie.

I like to see that more and more movies are continuing to be filmed in Pittsburgh. It adds a lot to the economy, brings people to the city, and adds name recognition to the town. I agree with Katie, I don't know if it is exactly fair that high school football players are excluded because of "eligibility". Not to abide to the stereotype but I think it would be good if athletes got experiencing acting or being exposed to a movie; they would have a lot to learn. One final thing I'm confused about with this article is that it seems like a advertisement and is in a major newspaper.
