A New Day: Post Recession Insights on Audiences and the Theatre Experience

Bruce E. Whitacre: There is a theory that for the last two centuries, the 14th year signaled the start of the century as it truly would be: The 1814 Congress of Vienna opened Europe to a century of remarkable progress and peace; World War I presaged the 20th century as one of war and turmoil. While we won't know for decades what kind of century 2014 bodes, as we emerge from our post-recession, post war foxholes and look around, the environment for public sector organizations is very different now than it has been for the past two or three generations.

I like the fact that they are getting audience's involved in the show and really thinking about what is going on and how they can contribute. It reminds me first of an Androno Article written about the effects of pop music in the 40's and how pop music is corrupting society. More specifically how society is headed toward music that is there to relax/reset our minds and allow us to escape from the boringness of work because as a society our work is monotonous and we don't want to have to work anymore when we go home. I feel like sometimes this happens when people go to see theater; they are tired of work and want to sit back and be told a story. But seeing that there is a growing market of people who are going to shows early to get involved and know more about the story is very heart warming.
