The Great Courses Require Great Production

NYTimes.com: Attention, college professors: If you aspire to film a lecture series for the Great Courses, the extended-learning outfit here, be prepared to check your idiosyncrasies at the door. “I had a professor who liked to rest his finger on his face,” Alisha Reay, a producer at the company, recalled, demonstrating the tic. “And he liked to use his middle finger.”

I've always thought that online courses were one of the greatest things that came out of the internet. The ability to learn from your home, at times that are convenient for you, and often for free, are invaluable advantages to people who do not have the money or time to pursue higher education. This article was interesting because it was about another aspect of the topic that I’ve never really given any thought, the professors themselves. It’s funny to think that for them, switching from the classroom to the film studio was probably similar to an actor’s transition from theater to film. I also love that some of the professors actually gave as well took something away from the experience. After all, technology isn’t all evil and impersonal, and can be a very powerful tool for growth and education. Hopefully, most of the professors went back to their classrooms a little less monotone and a little more energized!
