In Northern Ireland, a Celebration of Samuel Beckett

NYTimes.com: Beckett in the theater, Beckett in the church. Beckett amidst the ruins. Beckett in the pub, community college, cinema, castle and hairdresser. Beckett even at the butcher, where a sign proclaims “Happy Days Food Festival” alongside “Fermanagh Black Bacon.” Almost every public spot in this small town surrounded by lakes has been conscripted during the third edition of the Happy Days Enniskillen International Samuel Beckett Festival, which opened on July 31 and runs through Sunday.

Samuel Beckett, being a person who has intrigued many people with his works, has a festival in place for him in Northern Ireland. I find his work to always be a challenge to take in, having to read the script more than once to truly analyze what kind of world, and what kind of people he puts in to his work. I could almost imagine this being a festival combining all of his works into one big city wide assortment; putting into it, the booths perhaps recreating scenes from his plays, with, different outdoor venues performing sides from the works. It would be interesting to see, per this being a festival of his work that they would be granted special permission to possibly rework some of the notes that Beckett made to be so direct. Although I’m sure there are some plays that have to be taken to the literal point, whereas I think that you could get away with turning the setting into a slightly different twist.
