www.designboom.com: to enhance a series of musical performances, atmos studio has designed and installed an interactive tree-like network of LEDs in london’s camden roundhouse venue. titled ‘arboreal lightning’, the illuminated sinuous form responds to sound input, producing a dynamic lighting event to activate each show. the project was initially undertaken to complement the four-day ‘reverb festival of contemporary classical music’, aimed at showcasing technological innovations. the piece was commissioned in part by musician imogen heap, and will complement her on a year-long world tour.

THIS IS SUCH A COOL IDEA AND IT MAKES ME SO EXCIETED. I was talking to Hunter earlier today and we agreed that shapes in the middle of a stage that have or are themselves LEDs are really great for a production design, especially for music events. The first element about having this giant light tree in the middle of the stage is the juxtaposition of the technology of the LED lights with the fact that it is a tree which is a much more natural element. That idea is an appealing design because it draws in the eye as “weird” or “cool”. The second thought that came to my mind when I was reading about the tree was how it was actually sort of engulfing the theater giving the large space a smaller feeling. The eye immediately goes to the color changing trunk, but the eye is pulled in every direction by the “branches” that are following the pattern of the trunk. I wish I could have seen this live because it seems like a very elegant design that could actually fit a myriad of different musical styles.
