Classy or trashy? Dancers twerk to classical music

Toronto Star: You rarely use the words “twerking” and “classical music” in the same sentence.
But that’s the only way to describe a controversial new music video that fuses a piece of classical music with a gyrating, scantily clad Korean dance troupe.
The eye-popping video was masterminded by a Belgian classical music festival in a bid to bring a century-old symphony to new ears.
It seems to have worked — the clip has racked up more than 1.7 million views in the past week.

I mean...I guess? While I understand the desire to bring classical music into the youth mainstream, I personally do not think having K-pop stars twerking to it will achieve that goal. I actually had my roommate watch the clip and asked her how it made her feel and if she would want to listen to classical music from it. She was very confused, and said it did not persuade her in any way to listen to the likings of Brahms or Saint-Saens. Some may call classical music sacreligious, and having scantily dressed girls twerking to it is disrespectful, but for me, that's not quite it. It just seems like a strange and desperate attempt to get millennials to listen to classical music. I think a more effective (yet more expensive and complicated) strategy would be to emphasize and fund school orchestras, from middle school until high school. Being a violinist, my musical education is what made me appreciate classical music, and I am sure all my music friends would agree. It has to do with it being in one’s upbringing and being introduced to it. I think classical music has a bad rap to it from the younger generation, to be boring and not cool. At the same time, I understand where they are coming from. Unfortunately, the classical world is greatly catered to the older, white generation because that is who had the privilege of being exposed to it in their youth.
