Before I got into stage management, I did a lot of work in sound, and more specifically, in live music concerts at my high school. One of the most difficult things for me was setting up and mixing live pianos. No one wants to hear the clunking of the keys in the mix, but the other sound is quite beautiful. After reading this article, I realize that I was taking the wrong approach: I was only using one mic. It never occurred to me to use more than one, but it makes sense in terms of EQing the mix. Due to the amount of mics that were available for these performances, I don't think it would have been possible, but this article really opened me up to microphone placement in terms of pianos.
