National Theatre decision to ditch War Horse musicians sparks dispute

News : The Stage: Musicians from the West End production of War Horse are in dispute with the National Theatre after the organisation terminated the performers’ contracts.
All five musicians were made redundant from the show’s New London Theatre run last month, in a decision the NT says was supported by the show’s creative team.

I think it is funny that the termination of the musicians would be so controversial. There are only five of them and according to the article there were plenty of successful productions that ran without live musicians. I have not seen the show, but if the esthetic of seeing the performers play music throughout the play is not a part of the design of the production, then its importance may need evaluation. Basically I am asking, what is the big deal? Is it so controversial or is that just in the header to attract readers? Cause it worked on me.
