DreamWorks Animation Unveils $2.4 Billion Shanghai Complex

Variety: DreamWorks Animation revealed plans on Thursday for a $2.4 billion entertainment complex in Shanghai, China.
Due to open in 2017, the Dream Center will have a 500-seat Imax theater, an entertainment district modeled on London’s West End and a venue for red carpet and festival events.

And here increases my incentive to go to China when I graduate. It is really neat how these companies are expanding overseas. I know, I know, they are taking over the industry and monopolizing the market, but who cares? When companies go to other countries, it isn't like they are bringing an entire staff of Americans with them. They will most likely hire a LOT of people from the surrounding area, and with the way things are in China that can only be a good thing. With so many people in Shanghai, I'm sure they will make a lot of profits easily as long as they make the ticket prices affordable to the citizens. I wonder how many new design staff they will be hiring to fill their spaces, or more so if they will go with Chinese designers over American designers.

I think it's really interesting that there is still a lot of business in themed entertainment. It just goes to show what some good branding can do, as far as I'm concerned. I think it's amazing that with travel costs and ticket prices, places like Disney World and Universal still make money, pretty much solely on the branding.

I love these renderings and would love to work there is I could speak Chinese. American theatre artists usually think of working in either LA or New York after graduation, but there is tons of interesting work to be done in other countries. I would love to one day learn another language and and work in a foreign country. A lot of cool and innovative theatre is all around the world and there is more work to be done than in just America. I think this DreamWorks Animation complex is going to be be sick and state of the art. Would love to visit or possibly intern there.

These renderings are beautiful! I think good renderings really sell a project. Yeah you can have sections, plans, and elevations, but beautiful renderings really show the investors and potential visitors how beautiful and grand the design can really be. It's interesting that DreamWorks so much money in this new project. They must have a lot of optimism that this venture will be profitable and attract the amount of people that they want. It looks an incredibly exciting place and maybe one day I might be able to visit it...along with Shanghai Disney.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. The company claims it's going to be the next Broadway or West End, but both of those places are combinations of many different organizations and companies, not a giant conglomerate that was built as one preconceived concept. Monopolies get one company a lot of money, but they don't create the most creative environment. If Dreamworks can make this a truly collaborative environment, it could be really cool, but right now it seems like this "entertainment complex" could easily turn into an elaborate theme park.

This building/complex looks amazing. I can't even begin to imagine how hard it is to organize the building of something this giant. This place does seem overly flashy. I don't think that I would like to work at a place like this. I do think that it would be a cool place to work, but I couldn't handle the showiness of the place. It totally makes sense to me that dream works would want to get a larger hold in china.

Like everyone else said, these are some amazing renderings! And they will definitely attract people to work on the project and see the finished location. That being said, just because it is one company, DreamWorks at that, I would view this as a place like Disney World as opposed to Broadway. But only time will truly tell how this will turn out. That being said, this is definitely another example that China is rising.
