Contenders for the New Musical Tony Are Anyone’s Guess

NYTimes.com: Practice usually makes perfect, but not for this season’s new Broadway musicals. Eleven of the 12 new shows had tryout runs in an effort to get them right, only to find a tepid reception from critics and audiences when they finally opened on Broadway.
The 12 shows are such a mixed bag that this year’s race for the top prize, the Tony Award for best musical, is wide open for the first time in recent memory. In question is not just that award, but also (and this is truly rare) the four or five nominations for that category, which will be announced on April 29.

As an outsider, I think it is exciting that this year's contenders aren't clear as day. It is definitely true that for the past few years, it has been completely obvious which musical and play would likely win the Tony even before the nominations were announced. If I was a producer of one of these productions, this anticipation might very well kill me. However, I do truly believe that this year's Tony nominations will be more exciting than in past years, simply because they will be more of a surprise. It will be interesting to see who ends up winning the top awards in the end.

I was actually thinking about this a few days ago. This season has been a little on the rough side for musicals. What I think the challenge for picking the nominees this year is going to be what is the best of these shows. This seems self-explanatory, but normally there is a show that is clearly the winner, but this year they are all pretty mediocre. All we can do is wait and see.

I am sad but not surprised about this years run of the mill season. Theatre isnt making its mark on audiences like it used to. And the big point here is the question what can be done?? Well like many this year have tried to do reworking things is great. However, I think it needs to start from the begininning; producers, directors, actors, writers and everyone else needs to change how they attempt shows and put new edges onto them to entertain the audience. As for this years tony award winner... It is anyones game but I think regardeless some changes need to be made. NOW!
