CinemaCon 2014: '4-D' theater coming to Regal Cinemas L.A. Live

latimes.com: A South Korean company aiming to transform the way Americans experience movies at the multiplex is bringing its "4-D" theater technology to Los Angeles.
Seoul-based CJ Group, the conglomerate that operates Asia's largest theater chain, has signed a deal with AEG to open a "4-D" theater at Regal Cinemas L.A. Live Stadium 14 in downtown L.A. this summer.

I love 4D cinemas and have been fascinated with them since I was little. I remember seeing a 4D show at Hersey park and it was amazing. There was another one I saw at Disney of "Honey I Shrunk the Kids." I remember the experience was thrilling and life like. It give each audience member a more personalized experience. Movie theaters have so much potential and they need to keep an audience coming. I personally don't go to the movies that often because they are expense, crowded, and not that much different from a DVD. The cost to install 4D cinemas must be pretty expensive, but I think its really worth it. You could never get close to this experience with an in home entertainment package. I would start attending movies more if they included fun smells, movements, and visual effects.

I don't know if I see this as being a really successful thing. 4D cinemas seems like a theme park attraction or something you'd have at a science museum. I just can't see the film industry really jumping over to this sort of base. But then again, I never really saw 3D movies as something that would stick around and was proven wrong there.

This is really exciting! This theater is coming to my home! It was surprising to me after reading the article that it took so long for these 4D cinemas to come to America. I agree with sam and see that it might be hard for these theaters to become truly successful when they resemble theme park attractions...but where else to debut and American 4D cinema than in LA. Angelinos love to have to most exciting opportunities at their fingertips so it only makes sense to test these 4D cinemas out in sunny Southern California. Honestly, this might be a good medium between the extreme prices of disney and the normal prices to go see a movie. It will be like experiencing an hour of a Disney attraction without having to pay several hundred dollars.

I can see how 4D theatre can become a big thing here in America. Like Kristen said, you couldn't get close to this experience with a home entertainment system. Saying that though, with the amount of other worldly places and explosions in films, I wonder if people will be hesitant about going or will jump at the chance for this experience. It seems like this experience could easily turn into a cinematic haunted house rather than a sensory cinematic experience. I am definitely curious to see how 4D cinema fares in LA and maybe, eventually, the rest of the country.

It's pretty interesting that this kind of technology has become ubiquitous enough for companies to even be considering expanding 4D movies on such a large scale. While really cool, it does seem like with these changes the movie industry starts to become more and more like theme park attractions. I don't think it's entirely impossible for 4D cinema to become more popular, though we maybe have a ways to go before they become common. I also definitely agree with Keith that something in 4D just gives a little more than your standard movie experience, which will certainly help to set it apart.
