A day at the Met: opera for New Yorkers and the world

Alternet: In a cramped backstage area at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, French mezzo-soprano Sophie Koch adjusts her 19th century dress.
Around her are other singers, a costume assistant, two cameramen and a dozen stagehands ready to move a tree and a park bench to change the sets for the second act of Jules Massenet's "Werther".

This article about the extra preparation involved for live HD broadcasts of New York’s Metropolitan Opera House teases my imagination. I want to see larger – and more – photos of the backstage surreality. Better yet, a documentary of behind-the-scenes military-esque planning and deployment of the event. After a bit of googling, The Audition looks like a compelling movie, but I am more interested in the costumes and the sets. So, I just put Becoming Traviata on my library queue. In terms of expanding audiences, the Met’s HD option is exciting and encouraging for the future of the art.
