Cultural Diplomacy in Emerging Markets: China, UAE, Indonesia, and Russia

USC Center on Public Diplomacy | PD News – CPD Blog: China, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and Russia are now known globally for their economic strength. But what about their cultures? These states are much more than just their GDPs, and increasingly, they are attempting to gain global recognition not only for their rapid growth, but also for their rich cultural traditions.

A country showing the world its power with displays of culture is nothing really new. That is what the opening ceremonies for the Olympics are for. Sochi wanted to show the world how amazing they are (which they did fail a bit), but when the Olympics were in China, that was an amazing demonstration of wealth that earned serious global recognition. They are constantly putting out demonstrations to show the world which, in my opinion is a little creepy. As for the Middle East I would love to go there and see the cultural richness in Dubai.

I think this comparison of emerging countries and their cultures, in light of how people so often compare declining powers to their decrease in art and culture. I hope that while all of these countries continue to increase their cultural presence in the world, that they not only try to focus on their traditional heritage, but develop new forms too.
