Latino Theater in Los Angeles es Muy Bueno

HowlRound: I can't believe I don't speak Spanish. I grew up in Texas, but I took German in high school. I lived in Washington Heights for three years, yet I never learned much more than huevos y queso sándwich (though I did like being called mami). Now I live in Southern California, but still, like most white Americans, I recognize little more than the word on exit signs—salida—and that's mainly because the signs look just like the ones in English.

All the theatre companies that this article mentions have one important thing in common: community. They write, produce and perform about, for and from a specific community of people with distinct histories and traditions that are united by the greater Latino culture. I hope that more and more of these theaters open across the country, not only in order to foster community spirit through the arts but also because I think it's important for people across the nation to realize that American theater is changing, just like America itself, and representing the ever-changing cultural and social landscape of the country today. Like the article's author, I hope that the changes in America are reflected in the national arts scene through elements such as Latino theatre.
