Kafig uses multiple genres to unlock door to dance in Pittsburgh Dance Council debut

TribLIVE: Compagnie Kafig, which makes its Pittsburgh Dance Council debut Feb. 1, was founded by French choreographer Mourad Merzouki in 1996. It gives, on average, 150 performances each season.
Out of roots in circus and martial arts, Merzouki explores an eclectic world through the lens of hip-hop. He has created 21 works on a wide array of subjects over the past 17 years, including the 2006 “Terrain Vague” set in a fantasized no-man's land, and the 2012 Franco-Taiwanese “Yo Gee Ti.”

It's amazing to see how people have been able to seamlessly connects such seemingly different kinds of performance. It's true that in a way, everything is just forms of movement, but it takes a lot to create a piece that works smoothly and looks good. Having recently seen DanceLight here at CMU, I was reminded of how incredibly well dance and music can be used to create stories and convey emotion. I would love to be able to see what Kafig was able to make.
