This does not surprise me at all. The music in Kinky boots has that "kinky" beat to it most young people love. The ideas and concepts expressed in the show/ music are very appealing to people in society right now. The music was also written by Cyndi Lauper and people seem to love her music so it makes sense why Kinky Boots would win a grammy for best album. I'm excited that a show with one of our own alums stars in is having such great success!

Music is such a subjective thing to judge. There are many different styles and genres that people like and dislike. Is the judging panel who decided on the Best Musical Theater Album a varied amount of people? Or is it just people that like that kind of music? I know a lot of people that are musical purists and only like the classic styles. They hate the new musicals that are coming out with rock and pop-esque rhythms and will probably never go see them because of it. A lot of the new musicals are great, but they can't be judged together with the older ones. I want to know who was on the panel to make the decisions of "best music" and see if they are the kind of people who grew up on the classics or jumped in after the music became more rock/pop-esque.

Having seen (and heard) Kinky Boots live, it is no surprise to me that it won the best musical theater album award at this years Grammy's. The music in this show is lively and exciting which keeps the audience singing along throughout the whole show. Its sort of rock and roll edgy quality that it has to it made me really like it. I somewhat agree with Kristen that Music is a very subjective thing to judge, but if we look at it like that where do we draw the line. Every award EVER is "subjective". As a designer there will be plenty that love your work and plenty that hate it but you still have a chance to win an award for it. For actors and the Academy awards while one person may love your work others may hate it. But guess what, it doesn't matter, as long as that one group that judges it likes it you have the award. For an award such as the Grammy's I can't imagine they would have any judge that would be super bias to one show. This all being said I apologize if I am coming of a bit aggressively, its just this sort of mentality really grinds my gears. If this is truly how we should all be thinking then why don't we just stop all award shows due to the results being too subjective. EVERYBODY WINS!!!! YAY!

It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that Kinky Boots won. The trend has been that whatever show wins the Tony for best musical wins the Grammy. The album itself is quite good. When I listened to it the first time I somewhat forgot that I was listening to a musical. There is a really positive message in each song and proves that the show is a real hit.
